Bonfire Night returns to park with a bang

Fireworks will return to the region’s biggest park as the borough gets ready for Bonfire Night.

As well as fireworks in Rochdale, Heywood and Middleton, celebrations will return to Heaton Park for the first time in seven years.

Manchester City Council last held firework celebrations in its parks in 2019 but they will return this year on Saturday, November 7.

The council has decided not to include bonfires, with the entertainment focusing instead on free family-friendly fireworks to “bring communities together”.

Another change will see two different displays at the parks, with a reduced-noise display held at 5pm for families and SEND audiences, followed at 8pm with the main fireworks displays.

Cllr Garry Bridges, Leader of Manchester City Council said: “Residents tell us how important it is to create opportunities for our communities to come together and celebrate.

“Our fireworks display is exactly one of those events that bridge culture and background – and so it’s fantastic to bring back these free community displays that give families, friends and neighbours a shared experience.”

Earlier in the week, on Monday, November 2, Rochdale Council will be holding the first of its three Bonfire Night events, with a firework display and family funfair at at Bowlee Community Park in Middleton.

The funfair starts at 6pm, followed by the lighting of the bonfire at 7pm, and a reduced-noise fireworks display set to music at 7.30pm.

Food and soft drinks will be available to buy.

On Tuesday, November 3, the celebrations move to Queen’s Park Road in Heywood.

The funfair starts again at 6pm, with the lighting of the bonfire at 7pm, and the fireworks display at 7.30pm.

The Bonfire Night finale takes place on Wednesday, November 4, at Cronkeyshaw Common in Rochdale.

The bonfire will be lit at 7pm, followed by the fireworks display at 7.30pm.

Alcohol is not being sold at any of the Rochdale Council events and visitors are asked not to bring alcohol, fireworks or sparklers to the venues.

There are also no toilet facilities or parking on site.
