Landmark pub on the market for £425,000

A landmark Rochdale pub which has been vacant for eight years is on the market in a bid to give it a new lease of life.

The Kingsway Hotel, at 125 Kingsway, Rochdale, closed in July, 2018, and is now on the market through Fleurets estate agents with a price of £425,000.

Fleurets is marketing the property as suitable for residential or retail use, subject to planning permission.

As well as the pub and dining areas downstairs, upstairs includes a three-bedroom private flat and function room.

The former pub was built in 1938 and visitors to it described the interior as “stepping back in time”.

It’s CAMRA listing reads: “Dating from 1938 this pub has four rooms, a further room upstairs, and it very little altered with only the off-sales removed.

“The entrance on Kingsway retains its original revolving door and leads to a large lobby bar with parquet floor, plain skylight, and original fixed seating.

“The bar counter is the original with a distinct mainly horizontal panelled front. A door on the front left has a ‘parlour’ etched and frosted panel, fixed seating, and another wide strip of mainly horizontal original panelling.

“A passage leads to the public bar and the lounge bar both with etched and frosted panels in the doors.”

In a 2014 review on the Pubs Galore website, reviewer ROB Camra said: “Walking into this pub is like stepping back in time.

“You enter through a revolving door which is unusual in itself.

“The main bar room is beautifully wood panelled. The room to the left feels like it hasn’t changed in 50 years, there’s a dart board in this room.

“The room to the right is similar, but was partially set up for dining. The food is cheap and cheerful as is the beer as it’s a Sam Smiths pub.

“Sadly there’s no real ale, but my pint of Dark Mild was something silly like £1.40. Not many people in though on my Friday lunchtime visit.”
